WELCOME TO JURE 2017

Dear colleagues and members of JURE,

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 21th Conference of the JUnior REsearchers of EARLI (European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction). The conference will be hosted by the University of Tampere, Finland, August 27-28, 2017, right before the main EARLI conference.

We would like to invite junior researchers around the world to join the conference and engage in compelling and important discussions about learning and instruction research. JURE 2017 offers you an opportunity to share your work, receive and provide constructive feedback, attend various workshops related to methodologies, career development and academic writing, become involved in conference sessions as a discussant and/or chair, and to network in a scientific community. The theme of the JURE 2017 pre-conference is: “Education in the light of multiple perspectives: Towards intertwining personalised and collaborative learning”.
Over the past years and more recently, the field of Research on Learning and Instruction, has seen tremendous shifts in the delivery of learning and instruction, its goals, and its understanding as a discipline. The aim of the conference is to learn, introduce, and discuss new insights and challenges posed by ongoing changes within the educational field. Moreover, the conference aims to stimulate new and exciting ideas and approaches for addressing the ongoing development.

Challenges often originate from new ways of looking at the organisation and delivery of education. To be able to address challenges and identify opportunities, JURE 2017 focuses on three general questions:
  1. How do learners learn, and how can we support their learning in these ‘new’ environments? (e.g. self-regulation, instruction in online, blended and face-to-face learning environments, situated and collaborative learning environments)
  2. How do we assure that we do not lose the rich social context of learning? (e.g. participation, collaboration, democratic values)
  3. How do we make sure the curricula and institutions have a solid answer on these new evolutions in education? (e.g. curriculum design, evidence-based teaching, professional development)
We strongly encourage submissions about learning, instruction, and curricula or institutional development. We aim to provide participants a broad range of research topics, methodological approaches and outlooks on research on learning and instruction. Submissions may include papers on recently conducted or ongoing research during poster presentations or symposia, or presenting ideas on future research in round tables. Together, JURE 2017 represents research findings and perspectives on the topical questions of today and tomorrow in learning and instruction.

We hope that while at the conference, you will also have time to enjoy and explore the beautiful city of Tampere. The centre of the city is located between the lakes Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi, with the rapids of Tammerkoski running through the town centre. Tampere was originally founded on the banks of these rapids in 1779 by Gustav III, the King of Sweden. Tampere has been an industrial pioneer in Finland since the very beginning, and is well known for its red brick factory buildings in the heart of the city.
You can enjoy the scenery from the Näsinneula tower, a 168 meters high observation tower located in the Särkänniemi amusement park. You may also tour around the city, and explore the variety of museums, and other cultural sites from theatres to musical experiences. The numerous cafes and bistros around the city will offer you a place to relax and enjoy the local atmosphere, and coffee from the nearby roasteries.

The main campus of the University of Tampere is close to the Tampere city centre. The University of Tampere is Finland's biggest provider of higher education in the field of social sciences and the accompanying administrative sciences. The origins of the University are in its forerunner, the Civic College. To this day the University of Tampere has retained its strong orientation to society, to public and private services and to professional university education. The research perspectives are the various phenomena of the society, health and welfare. Some 15,000 students are currently pursuing degrees at the University of Tampere. The School of Education is one of the nine schools of the University of Tampere. It offers its students a possibility to become qualified as class and subject teachers, kindergarten teachers, experts of education in the public or private sector, and experts of speech technique and vocology.

We look forward to meeting all of you in Tampere,
